Specialty Growers is located on 10 acres midway between Brighton and Howell in Livingston County. The pastoral setting serves as both the home and business of owner Karen Bovio. During Open Houses, gardeners are welcome to shop the entire Specialty Growers stock while they enjoy the country atmosphere and admire the spectacular floral displays. For convenient shopping, be sure to bring a wagon.

Our staff is on hand to assist with the selection and conveyance (to the checkout stations) of plants and to answer gardening questions. Cookies and lemonade are available, and often a guest speaker is on hand to talk about plants. Specialty Growers Open Houses offer a delightful way to shop and get acquainted with other garden enthusiasts. The hours for Open Houses are 9am to 5pm

LACASA Garden Tour
Specialty Growers is a sponsor of the LACASA Garden Tour, which will be held this year on July 10th and 11th. On tour days, we will be open from 9am to 5pm. We donate 10 percent of our proceeds over the two-day event to LACASA (Livingston Area Council Against Spousal Abuse). The organization, headquartered in Howell, supports and shelters victimized adults and children, educates the community and encourages positive action. Customers can purchase tickets for the tour at the nursery or at our stand at the Brighton Farmer’s Market.

May Open Shoppers

Hypertufa planter class, June 12th, 10am – 2 pm, Cost $40 (click for information).

Advanced class, July 17th, 9 am – 4 pm, Cost $50 (click for information).

Specialty Growers will host a class on June 12th at 10 am on how to make your own hypertufa planter. The creative two-hour session will be taught by Glenda Hopp of Farmbrook Designs. The cost of the class is $40.00 per person and includes all ingredients and instruction.

Hypertufa is a mix of Portland cement, peat moss, perlite and vermiculite. The containers are perfect for all kinds of plants: alpines, dwarf conifers, “hens and chicks” and, of course, annuals and perennials. Hypertufa also is the ideal medium for garden art.

Glenda came up with the idea for a hypertufa business in 2000. She and her son, Chris, researched recipes, types of ingredients, mold ideas and possible markets before launching Farmbrook Designs. Since then, they have been regular vendors at Master Gardener Conferences and many other gardening events.

Brighton
Farmer’s Market (Click for Map)

Specialty Growers has been selling perennials and herbs at the Brighton Farmer’s Market since 1984. The Market is held every Saturday from May through October in the parking lot off First Street, adjacent to the Mill Pond in downtown Brighton. We set up our plant stand and display area for retail sales between 8am and 1pm every Saturday from the beginning of May through the end of July. Be sure to look for our white van with the yellow daylily painted on the side.

Each week we feature an assortment of perennials, herbs, unusual annuals and seasonal gourmet vegetable plants. The selection changes from week to week, so customers always stop by to see what’s new and different. Our knowledgeable staff can answer your gardening questions and advise you on the selection and care of your plants.

Group Visits
We are always happy to have garden clubs and other interested groups visit Specialty Growers to see our nursery operation and gardens in bloom and to shop for unusual plants. If you would like more information or wish to set up an appointment for your group,
