Playing with Pollen – an Introduction to Daylily Hybridizing – 1 pm (both Saturday and Sunday, Free)

At 1 pm, gather under the tent for owner Karen Bovio’s informative presentation on growing your own daylily hybrids.

Karen will explain the how’s and why’s of creating new daylilies by dabbing pollen from one flower to another. She’ll explain how to cross-pollinate, develop your own unique hybrids, keep accurate records, and evaluate your creations. It’s simple to do! You may not produce an award-winning new variety, but you’ll have fun watching your own seedlings grow and bloom!
Karen has been growing daylilies since 1976. She learned the ins and outs of daylily breeding from hybridizer and nurseryman Al Goldner during the late 1970’s and 1980’s. After starting Specialty Growers in 1982, she spent over a decade developing her own daylily breeding program. In addition to her own hybrids, the daylily field at Specialty Growers features varieties from other breeders, including Al Goldner.
